SUMMARY:Sat. May 16 Webinar 12-1 pm
DESCRIPTION:Disarm & Divest During COVID19 \nWebinar Before Sentencing \nSATURDAY\, MAY 16\, 12-1pm.   \n  \nThe Kings Bay Plowshares defendants will hold their final webinar before sentencing\, this Saturday\, May 16\, 12-1 pm ET. Jeremy Scahill\, co-founder of the Intercept\, will host the defendants. Lead attorney Bill Quigley will join the webinar followed by Q & A. \nYou are invited to the Zoom webinar.\nWhen: May 16\, 2020 12:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada)\nTopic: Kings Bay Plowshares Pre-sentencing Gathering \nPlease click the link below to join the webinar:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/81679745485 \nOr iPhone one-tap :\nUS: +16465588656\,\,81679745485# or +13126266799\,\,81679745485#\nOr Telephone:\nDial(for higher quality\, dial a number based on your current location):\nUS: +1 646 558 8656 or +1 312 626 6799 or +1 301 715 8592 or +1 669 900 9128 or +1 253 215 8782 or +1 346 248 7799\nWebinar ID: 816 7974 5485\nInternational numbers available: https://us02web.zoom.us/u/kuNizVJWo \n  \nThe panel will be discussing the need for civil resistance disarmament actions such as the Kings Bay Plowshares 7\, the continued build-up of militarism\, and the destitute condition of our world before and during the pandemic. They will also speak on divesting military funding to serve human needs during COVID-19 and beyond. \n  \nCarmen Trotta of NYC St. Joseph House Catholic Worker; Mark Colville of New Haven\, CT Amistad C.W.; Clare Grady of Ithaca C.W.; Fr. Steve Kelly\, S.J. (held for the last two years in GA county jails); Martha Hennessy of NYC Maryhouse C.W. and a granddaughter of Dorothy Day\, co-founder of the Catholic Worker movement; Elizabeth (Liz) McAlister of Baltimore’s Jonah House and widow of Phil Berrigan\, and Patrick O’Neill of Fr. Charlie Mulholland C.W. in Garner\, N.C. The sentencing recommendations call for 18 months for Liz McAlister (already served 17 months)\, up to 47 months for Steve Kelly (served two years)\, and up to 27 months for the others. We do not know at this time if the sentencing will take place in person on May 28 and 29 in the Brunswick\, GA courtroom or remotely by video conferencing. \n  \nThe Kings Bay Plowshares 7 are scheduled for sentencing for their nonviolent symbolic disarmament action at the largest nuclear sub-base in the world\, on April 4th\, 2018. Kings Bay is the Atlantic home port to a fleet of Trident submarines that contain one-quarter of the U.S. deployed nuclear weapons. Their action occurred on April 4\, 2018\, the 50th anniversary of the assassination of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. \n  \nIt’s time to wash our hands of Trident\, to demand that money should be directed towards health care for all\, particularly during the COVID-19\, for all future pandemics\, for all human needs\, and to cut funding for the military. The next generation of Trident submarines will cost $1.2 Trillion over the next ten years. The Nobel Prize-winning International Campaign for the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) has pointed out that the U.S. spent $35.1 billion on nuclear weapons in 2019. This could have provided: 300\,000 intensive care beds\, 35\,000 ventilators\, and the salaries for 150\,000 nurses and 75\,000 doctors. Furthermore\, if only a small portion of conventional weapons spending were redirected many more resources could be available to provide for the rest of the world’s survival needs rather than the endless wars our government pursues now. Our world would discover its real security lies in shared humanity\, not in nationalist arrogance or domination. \n  \nAction Items \nCall Congress to redirect funding from the military\, particularly Trident\, towards human needs. More info here. \nCall for Justice for Ahmaud Arbery\, a 25 year-old black man who was killed by two white supremacists while out running in Brunswick\, GA. See below: \nBefore COVID 19 a group of us here in Norfolk\, Virginia\, had been planning to do a five day\, 55 mile Holy Week pilgrimage for nuclear disarmament. It would be a week-long stations of the cross in this 75th year since the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki\, the beginning of the Nuclear Age. We were planning to walk Monday to Friday to 14 different sites in our Hampton Roads area that are connected to the nuclear weapons complex (military bases\, shipyards\, war industries\, and financial institutions) and at each location remember Jesus’ crucifixion\, the crucifixion of Hiroshima and Nagasaki\, and the threatened crucifixion of all of life by nuclear weapons. We would begin at a General Dynamics shipyard in downtown Norfolk and end at Newport News Shipbuilding where the Columbia class ballistic missile submarines are under development as replacement for the Trident submarine fleet. A script cobbled together from many sources would be read from at each site.\nSince we are unable to walk together\, Linda Modica in east Tennessee\, brand new host of a Zoom platform\, has offered to be the moderator for a community reading of the script over the five weekdays of Holy Week. We will gather on the Zoom site each day at 7 pm EST\, Monday\, April 6-Friday\, April 10. Each day we will read several stations from the script\, ending with a rosary mystery written by Kings Bay Plowshares defendant Fr. Steve Kelly from his cell-block in Glynn County Detention Center in Brunswick\, Georgia\, and then a few minutes for short reflections. We will finish by 8:15 pm EST each day\, with Good Friday taking a little longer. We can use at least a dozen readers a day\, if you’d like to read come onto the site by 6:50 pm EST to sign up.\nYou are welcome to join us for any part of the pilgrimage. Come and go as you like. The 61 page script is attached for you to use if you’d like to be a reader or to follow along on Zoom\, or if you’d just like to take the pilgrimage by yourself or with your household this week on your own time. Tomorrow we’ll begin by reading stations 1 and 2. The Norfolk Catholic Worker is organizing a five day\, 50 mile Stations of the Cross to mark 75 years since the advent of the nuclear age and the dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. From April 5-10 participants will walk through 6 Hampton Roads cities stopping at military bases\, shipyards\, defense contractors\, and financial institutions with ties to the nuclear war-fighting complex. We’ll begin Monday morning at General Dynamics and end Good Friday at Newport News Shipbuilding which is developing Columbia class ballistic missile submarines that will begin to replace the existing fleet of Trident submarines a decade from now. \n\nPlease forward this to anyone you think may be interested in joining us for the week or for a day. Contact Steve Baggarly for the Zoom link and further information williamsbaggarly@gmail.com \nThis event is being done virtually because of the virus.
